8 Strategies for College Students

Tagged Under : , , ,

When ADD teens head to college, life often becomes overwhelming. The intention is to do well, but studies show that 1/3 of students with ADD do not get through their first semester. The sudden freedom coupled with increased responsibility presents an often difficult challenge for a young adult with ADD.  The following strategies can help:

One – Learn about the ADD Brain

When you have ADD, you learn differently than the average student. Linear thinking does not work for you. Learn how to be you, and be efficient!

Two – Connect with student support services

Through the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act), colleges are required to accommodate students with ADD. Connect with available services and receive the help you need.

Three – Hire a coach

When you have an ADD/ADHD Coach, you have a support system to carry you through all aspects of college life.

Four – Take your medication

Get into a routine of taking your meds the same time every day, as directed by your doctor.

Five – Sleep

Again, it’s routine. Get to bed on a schedule – the same time each night.

Six – Exercise

Get 30 minutes of intense exercise each day.

Seven – Eat

Eat regular nutritious meals, focusing on foods with protein, ample vitamins and Omega-3.

Eight – Be aware of addictive behaviors

Alcohol and/or drug addiction often co-occur with ADD. Be aware of this fact and avoid being caught up in the college party scene.

Deciding to make a commitment to yourself and your education is a turning point in your life. If you are there right now, I would love to support you every step of the way!
